Elevator Brewing Company
Elevator Brewing Company wanted to send a message to Ohio beer enthusiasts in 2010. But how does a brewery send a message? In a bottle, of course.
The breakthrough year is officially nigh for the Columbus-based brewery, which has already established a sterling reputation throughout 11 years of business. In the past seven months, Elevator has implemented a second monthly specialty beer program to join a massively popular one already in place, introduced brewery tours, unleashed 14 limited batch beers and hosted multiple homebrew competitions. The accompanying Elevator Draught Haus Restaurant, housed in a building recognized by the National Register of Historic Places, has simultaneously continued to up the culinary ante, providing central Ohioans with a truly unique dining (and drinking) experience.
But the cherry on top - and the lynchpin of the future development of the brewery - was the January purchase of a mechanical bottling line. Prior to that time, Elevator's bottling production was wholly dependent upon a young man by the name of Sean Davies and what he could manage with his own two hands.
"I would estimate that we bottle in an afternoon what we used to do in a month," said Davies, now a brewer's assistant. That translates to roughly one case of beer labeled, bottled and packaged per minute.
Today, no fewer than four Elevator bottle products permeate the Columbus market. Popular selections include the award-winning Dark Horse Lager, Bleeding Buckeye Red Ale and Mogabi, a hoppy American wheat that is a favorite of Masterbrewer Vic Schiltz and Assistant Brewer, Mark Beery. The summer seasonal is the refreshing Heiferweizen, and the autumn release - the 1810 Oktoberfest Lager - hit the streets on Aug. 21. The volume of incoming bottle accounts has increased so rapidly that the brewery was forced to hire a second salesman in July. Giant Eagle recently signed on as an Elevator carrier, with more massive retailer accounts on the immediate horizon.
"Our goal is 100 percent penetration of the Columbus metropolitan area, with an eye toward statewide distribution by the end of the year," explained Dick Stevens, Elevator owner.
The latest step in Elevator's mission of total Ohio domination has been joining forces with Fintech, which Stevens credits with helping the brewery sway some prized beverage carriers.
